How do you book the Life in the UK test, and what does it cost?

Last updated 22 October 2026

You can only book the test online. Start on the gov.uk page for the test, then use the Start now button. It takes you to the booking site, which PSI runs for the Home Office.

You need an email address and a debit or credit card. You also need one form of accepted ID.

Which website should you use to book the Life in the UK test?

Use the gov.uk page for the test and follow its Start now button. gov.uk describes that service as the only government service for booking the test.

Other sites offer to book for you, or look like the booking site. Start from gov.uk each time so you know where you are. Simply Pass does not book tests.

How much does the Life in the UK test cost?

The test costs £50 each time you sit it. You pay by card when you book.

Some slots cost more, on top of the £50. A slot within 24 hours (super priority) costs £30. A slot 24 to 72 hours away (short notice) costs £25. A slot outside core hours costs £25, and a Sunday slot costs £25. A closed centre, for privacy, is priced on request.

Look at the extras only if you need them. Most people book a normal slot with a few days or weeks of notice.

Can you book the Life in the UK test at short notice?

gov.uk asks you to book at least 3 days ahead. You can book sooner with a paid extra.

Book earlier than you think you need to. A day and a centre that suit you may not be free at the last minute, and you will want time to study with a date in mind.

How do you choose a test centre?

More than 30 test centres run across the UK, and you pick one when you book. The list of centres and their addresses shows inside the booking, after you log in.

One test centre is outside the UK. It is only for serving members of the British Armed Forces and their dependants.

The handbook says people on the Isle of Man and in the Channel Islands follow different arrangements.

Take the address from your own booking and confirmation email. Websites that list centre addresses can be out of date or wrong.

Pick the centre by travel time from your door, not by distance on a map. A direct route you know is better than a short one you do not.

How should you plan your study around the booking date?

Pick a date, then count back. In the last week, do full mocks with the clock running. In the weeks before that, work through the chapters one at a time and test yourself after each.

Leave at least two days between your last mock and the test. You will remember more with a rested head than with a late night.

If your mock scores are not near 18 by two weeks before the date, consider moving the booking. Remember to move it at least 3 days before, so you do not lose the fee.

What happens at the centre?

Staff check your ID and take your photo. You store your phone, watch and notes in a locker, then take the test on a computer.

You can spend up to 2 hours at the centre in total, so plan the rest of your day around that.

Can you take the Life in the UK test in Welsh or Scottish Gaelic?

The test is usually in English. You can ask for Welsh at a test centre in Wales, or Scottish Gaelic at a test centre in Scotland. On the booking site, use the Special Arrangements step.

Can you cancel the Life in the UK test and get your money back?

You can cancel at least 3 days (72 hours) before your test and get a refund. If you change or cancel later, you lose the fee.

If the centre cancels your test, you can ask for a refund within 3 months.

Put the cancel-by date in your calendar the day you book. It is the one date on this page that can cost you money.

Who can help if something goes wrong with your booking?

The booking helpline is 0800 015 4245, Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm. You can also write to [email protected].

Keep your booking email. Have your booking details ready before you call.
