Chapters / Chapter 4

A modern, thriving society

Chapter 4 describes everyday life and culture in the UK today. It covers the nations and their capitals, religion, festivals and customs, sport, the arts, leisure and places to visit. It is a broad chapter, and the difficulty comes from the number of separate items rather than from any hard idea. There are patron saints and their days, public holidays, writers, composers, painters and sports people, and famous places across all four nations. People tend to forget the details of lists. Group the items to make them easier to hold: festivals by month, sports by type, writers by century, places by nation. Short, frequent sessions work well on this chapter, because each topic is small and self-contained. Read the explanations on the wrong answers too, as they often add a detail the handbook gives only in passing.
