Chapters / Chapter 1

The values and principles of the UK

Chapter 1 is the introduction to the handbook, and it is easy to skip because it is short. It describes the values that British life rests on, what the UK expects of people who live here, and what it offers in return. It also sets out the steps towards permanent residence or citizenship, and it describes the test itself. The handbook says the test questions draw on every part of the book, and that includes this chapter. People tend to find the lists the hardest part. The principles, the duties and the freedoms sound alike, and it is easy to put an item in the wrong list. Read the chapter once, slowly, and then check yourself on which items belong where. It is short enough to revisit often, and a few minutes with it before a mock can win you a point.
