How do you ask for special arrangements for the Life in the UK test?
You ask while you book, in the "Special Arrangements" step on the booking site. Do it before test day, because test day is too late to start.
This page covers what is checked. Other arrangements may exist, so read the booking page carefully and ask there.
Where is the step?
Book at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. The page sends you to the booking site. You need an email address, a debit or credit card and an accepted ID. The name on your booking must match your ID exactly. Book at least 3 days in advance.
During the booking, you reach a step called "Special Arrangements". That is where you tell the booking site what you need.
What can you ask for?
Two things are checked.
- A language. The test is usually in English. Welsh is possible at a centre in Wales. Scottish Gaelic is possible at a centre in Scotland. Read more in the Welsh and Gaelic guide.
- Headphones. From 1 October 2026 headphones are no longer a standard aid. You can have them only by an approved special arrangement.
Other needs may also be possible. The booking page is the place to look.
What is an exemption?
An arrangement changes how you sit the test. An exemption means you do not sit it at all. People with a long-term physical or mental condition may be exempt. This needs an exemption form or a letter from a doctor. Other exempt people include those under 18 and those aged 65 or over. Read the full list in who has to take the test.
Do not mix the two. If you are not sure which one you need, ask before you pay.
When should you ask?
As early as you can. We do not know how long an approval takes, so do not leave it to the last days. Booking needs at least 3 days, and a refund needs a cancellation at least 3 days (72 hours) before.
If you book and then find you need an arrangement, check the date. Cancelling at least 3 days before returns your money to your card. Cancelling later does not. You can do it in your Life in the UK account, under "Confirmed tests".
The booking site has a helpline for booking problems, open Monday to Friday.
What else do you need on the day?
Even with an arrangement, the normal rules stay. Bring the same original ID. No phone, watch, notes or handbook may enter the room. Lockers are provided. Arrive at the time in your email, at least 30 minutes early. Plan for up to 2 hours.
How can you prepare while you wait?
Take our free practice test with the 45-minute time limit, the way you will sit the real one.
A good chapter to read slowly is the values and principles chapter. It lists what the UK expects of you, such as respecting the law and the rights of others, and what it gives back, such as freedom of belief, freedom of speech and a fair trial. Learn the two lists as a pair.
