What ID do you need for the Life in the UK test?

Last updated 23 October 2026

What ID do you need for the Life in the UK test?

You need one accepted original ID, and the name on it must match the name on your booking exactly. A valid passport is one of the accepted forms.

If your ID is wrong, you cannot take the test, and you do not get your money back.

Which IDs are accepted?

These forms of ID are accepted:

  • a valid passport
  • a valid photo ID card from the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway
  • a valid photo travel document, but not an emergency one
  • a biometric residence permit or card, if your test is no later than 24 months after the expiry date printed on it, or before 31 December 2026, whichever comes first
  • an eVisa, which you use through a share code from your UKVI account

Check the date on your ID today, not on the morning of the test. If it has expired, fix that before you book.

Does the name have to match?

Yes, exactly. The name on your booking must match the name on your ID. Look at spelling, the order of the names, and any middle names or accents.

If your name is long or has more than one part, copy it carefully from the ID when you book. Do not type it as you usually write it. If you find a mistake, act before the 3-day limit. Our guide on a name that does not match your ID shows what to do.

Can you use a photocopy or a screenshot?

No. Bring the same original ID that you used to book. A copy or a screenshot is not accepted.

Put your ID somewhere safe the night before.

What if you have an eVisa?

Get your share code from your UKVI account before you book. Check that the name on your UKVI account is the same as the name you put on the booking. Then follow the steps at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test.

What happens on the day?

The staff check your ID against the booking. The centre takes your photo. If you refuse the photo, you cannot sit the test, and there is no refund.

There is no refund for the wrong ID either. Five minutes at home to check everything is worth it.

Phones, watches, notes and the handbook cannot go into the room. The centre has lockers. Read what to bring to the test for the full list.

Why does the ID matter after the test?

After the test you get an email with a unique reference number, the URN. It also shows next to your result in your Life in the UK account. You put the URN on your citizenship or settlement application. The Home Office checks your result and your photo with it.

Your ID and your photo become part of that record, which is why the rules are strict.

What if you cannot use your ID?

If your ID is out of date or not on the list, you need a new one before you book. Do not book first and hope. If you arrive with ID you cannot use, you lose the fee.

How can you get ready?

Once your ID is in order, use the time to study. A free practice test shows you the format, and the short handbook chapter on values and principles is a gentle first read.
