What if your name does not match your ID for the Life in the UK test?

Last updated 23 October 2026

What if your name does not match your ID for the Life in the UK test?

Fix it before test day. The name on your booking must match the name on your ID exactly, and you can be refused the test if it does not.

It is an easy way to lose £50, so it is worth five minutes of care.

Why does the name matter so much?

On the day, the centre compares your ID with your booking and takes your photo. Later, the Home Office uses your result and that photo to check your application.

So the booking, the ID and the person must all agree.

What do you lose if the names do not match?

There is no refund for the wrong ID, for missing documents or for refusing the photo. You also get no refund for illness or for being late. If the centre sends you home, you pay again for a new booking.

That is £50 again, plus any paid extras you chose.

What should you check before you book?

Look at the ID you will bring. Read the name on it letter by letter. Then read the name you typed on the booking form.

Check these things.

  • The spelling of every name, not only your first and last name.
  • Whether your ID shows more than one given name, and whether your booking shows the same ones.
  • Whether you changed your name after the ID was made, for example after marriage.
  • Whether the ID is valid on the test day and is an ID the booking site accepts.

Treat any difference as a risk, even a small one. The rule says "exactly".

What if you have more than one ID?

Choose the ID that shows the name you want to use, and book in that name. Bring that same original ID on the day. A copy or a screenshot is not enough.

If your passport and your other ID show different spellings, pick one and match the booking to it. Do not mix them.

What if you booked with the wrong name?

Check the date first. If the test is at least 3 days (72 hours) away, you can cancel in your Life in the UK account, under "Confirmed tests". You get the money back on your card. Then book again with the correct name.

If the test is less than 3 days away, a cancellation brings no refund. In that case, think about what is cheaper. Rebooking costs £50 again. Turning up with a mismatch can lose the fee as well.

What if you use an eVisa?

With an eVisa you book with a share code from your UKVI account. The name on your booking should be the name on that account. Check it there before you book.

Where do you book and get help?

You book at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. The page also has a helpline for booking problems, open Monday to Friday. Use it before test day.

What should you do while you wait for your test?

Once your booking is right, start learning. Take our free practice test to see where you stand.

If you want a short chapter to begin with, read the values and principles of the UK. It names five ideas behind British life: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, and taking part in community life. The test follows every part of the handbook, so even this short chapter counts.

More help with paperwork is in what ID you need and how to book the test.

Check yourself

  • Can you say the name on your ID, letter by letter, and does your booking show the same?
  • How many days are left before your test, and is that enough to cancel for a refund?
  • Which single ID will you carry on the day?
