Can you take the Life in the UK test online?

Can you take the Life in the UK test online?
No. You book the test online, but you take it in person at a test centre. The test is on a computer, with 24 multiple choice questions in 45 minutes.
If a website offers you the real test at home, do not trust it.
Why does it say "computer based"?
"Computer based" means you answer on a screen, not on paper. It does not mean you can sit at home. You go to a room at a centre, with staff, and you sit at one of their computers.
At the centre, staff check your ID and take your photo.
How do you book it online?
You book at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. The page sends you to the booking site. Book at least 3 days in advance. The test costs £50.
You need three things to book.
- An email address.
- A debit or credit card.
- An accepted ID, with a name that matches your booking exactly.
With an eVisa, you book with a share code from your UKVI account.
How many centres are there?
There are over 30 test centres in the UK. You choose one when you book, so pick one you can reach easily.
Forces members and their families can take the test in Germany and Cyprus.
What happens at the centre?
You arrive at the time in your email, at least 30 minutes before the test. You show your ID and have your photo taken. Phones, watches, notes and the handbook are not allowed. Lockers are provided, and smart devices are stored. No children or family can come in.
Plan for up to 2 hours at the centre in total. Read the full story of the day in what happens on test day.
When do you get the result?
You are told pass or fail on the day. An email with your unique reference number follows, whether you pass or fail.
Can you practise online?
Yes, and you should. Practice at home is not the real test, but it is a good way to learn. Try the free practice test on your phone or computer before you spend money on the real test.
Practise with the clock running, because the real test lasts 45 minutes.
Where should you start studying?
Study all five chapters of the handbook, because the test follows every part. For a gentle start, read the values and principles chapter. It is short, and it lists five ideas behind British life: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, and taking part in community life.
What if you need to cancel?
Cancel at least 3 days (72 hours) before for a refund to your card. Inside 3 days there is no refund. You can do this in your Life in the UK account, under "Confirmed tests". For the full booking steps, see how to book the test.
