Citizenship ceremonies in Oxfordshire

This page is for people becoming British citizens in Oxfordshire, including Oxford. The county council runs the ceremonies. Group ceremonies are free, and private ones start at £133 per adult.

How you book

The council emails you when your certificate arrives from the Home Office. You then book online, using your legal name and the full 16 digit reference from the Home Office. Most people attend within three months of the Home Office letter. Private slots go to whoever books first, so none can be held for you.

How often they run

Group ceremonies run once a week, and more often when demand is high.

Where ceremonies take place

  • Council Chamber, County Hall (group)
  • Oxford Register Office (private)

What to bring

  • Your letter or email from the Home Office
  • Current photo ID showing your date of birth, such as a driving licence or passport

Guests

You can bring up to two guests to a group ceremony, or up to six to a private one.

Private ceremonies and prices

Private ceremonies are possible, usually on Tuesday afternoons or Wednesday mornings.

Private ceremony, starting price per adult£133

The group ceremony fee is part of your citizenship application fee. Councils change their prices, so check the council page before you book.

A group ceremony welcomes 30 new citizens. The Lord Lieutenant or a deputy usually attends.

What happens at the ceremony

You make the oath or the affirmation of allegiance to the King, then the pledge to the United Kingdom. At the end you receive your certificate of British citizenship and a welcome pack. You become a British citizen at the ceremony, not before.
