Can you cancel the Life in the UK test and get a refund?

Last updated 23 October 2026

Can you cancel the Life in the UK test and get a refund?

Yes. If you cancel at least 3 days (72 hours) before your test, the fee goes back to your card. If you cancel or rearrange inside 3 days, you get no refund.

The time you act matters more than the reason, so decide early.

How do you cancel?

Log in to your Life in the UK account and open "Confirmed tests". You can cancel or rearrange the test there. Use the same details you used to book.

Do it as soon as you know you cannot go. Every day you wait brings you closer to the 3-day line.

How is the 3-day limit counted?

The limit is 72 hours before the start time of your test. Use your test time as the starting point and count back.

Here is an example. If your test is on Friday at 10 in the morning, you must cancel before 10 in the morning on Tuesday. After that, you lose the fee.

Put the exact cancel-by time in your phone calendar on the day you book. Add a reminder a day before it.

When do you not get a refund?

There is no refund in these cases:

  • You cancel or rearrange inside 3 days (72 hours).
  • You bring the wrong ID.
  • You are ill.
  • You are late.
  • You have missing documents.
  • You refuse the photo.

These rules are strict. Illness is hard, because you cannot plan it, so choose a date that does not fall in a busy week.

What if the test centre cancels?

If the centre cancels your test, ask for a refund within 3 months. Do not leave it. Write down the date the centre told you, and keep any emails.

How do you protect your money?

Most lost fees come from avoidable problems. Check these things before the day:

  • The name on your booking matches your ID exactly.
  • You have the same original ID you used to book. A copy or screenshot does not work.
  • You know the route to the centre and plan to arrive at the time in your email, which is at least 30 minutes before the test.
  • You have decided early if the date is wrong for you.

If you pay for a short notice slot, think harder before you book. A slot within 24 hours or with 24 to 72 hours' notice already falls inside the 3-day line, so a change would give no refund.

Should you cancel or still take the test?

Ask yourself if you are ready. Take a free practice test with a timer. You need 18 out of 24 to pass, and you want to be above that.

If your scores are well below it and the cancel-by time has not passed, cancelling and booking a later date can be a better choice than paying for a retake. You pay each time you sit the test.

If you do book later, the short handbook chapter on values and principles is a quick one to read first.
