How far ahead do you have to book the Life in the UK test?

Last updated 23 October 2026

How far ahead do you have to book the Life in the UK test?

You have to book at least 3 days ahead. You can book sooner if you pay for an extra.

The standard fee is £50. A slot within 24 hours costs £30 extra, and a slot with 24 to 72 hours' notice costs £25 extra.

Can you book the test for tomorrow?

Only with a paid extra. A slot within 24 hours costs £30 on top of the £50 fee, and a slot with 24 to 72 hours' notice costs £25 extra. A test tomorrow can therefore cost £80 in total.

Think twice before you pay for speed. A rushed test often means less study and more stress. If your visa, application or work does not depend on that exact day, a normal slot saves money.

How early should you book in practice?

The rule says 3 days at least. In practice, leave more time. The centre and the day you want may not be free at the last minute, and you will study better with a fixed date in front of you.

A good habit is to book a date a few weeks away, once you have started to study and know your pace. Then count back from the date:

  • In the last week, do full practice tests with a timer.
  • In the weeks before that, work through the chapters one at a time and test yourself after each.
  • Leave at least two days between your last full practice test and the real one.

If your practice scores are not near the pass mark of 18 out of 24 two weeks before the date, think about moving the booking. Move it at least 3 days before the test, so you keep your money. The guide on changing the date explains how.

What do you need to book?

You need an email address, a debit or credit card and an accepted ID. The name on the booking must match the name on your ID exactly. With an eVisa you book with a share code from your UKVI account.

You book online only, starting from gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. Our guide to how to book the test goes through the steps.

How do you choose a test centre?

There are over 30 test centres in the UK, and you choose one when you book.

Choose by travel time from your door, not by distance on a map. A direct route you know is better than a short one you do not. Think about parking or public transport, and about what time of day you are at your best.

Welsh is possible at a centre in Wales, and Scottish Gaelic at a centre in Scotland. Members of the forces and their families can take the test in Germany and Cyprus.

What are the paid extras?

On top of the £50 fee, you can pay for:

  • a slot within 24 hours: £30
  • a slot with 24 to 72 hours' notice: £25
  • a slot outside core hours: £25
  • a Sunday slot: £25

These are optional. Most people book a normal slot and pay only £50.

What if you cannot keep the date?

You can rearrange or cancel in your Life in the UK account, under "Confirmed tests". Do it at least 3 days (72 hours) before the test to get a refund to your card. Inside 3 days there is no refund.

Write the cancel-by date in your diary on the day you book.

How can you study towards the date?

Take a free practice test now to see where you start. Then read the first handbook chapter, on values and principles. It is short and has a section about the test.

Check yourself

  • What date will you book, and how many weeks of study does it give you?
  • What is your cancel-by date for that booking?
  • Which centre can you reach most easily, and how long does the trip take?
